Happy Birthday Rosty????

Well, I have been so busy tying to get the WTF (Wild Turkey Farms) blog going that I have neglected my family blog.

We had a pretty busy week-end at the farm- you'll have to check out the farm blog to see the pics of all the new babies.

Rosty was out of school for a few days so he stayed with my parents. Let me tell you how smart this child is..... He asks my mom why he never has birthday parties at her house. She explains to him that his friends don't live close by and it would be too far for them to come. Popa Donald comes up with a great plan they'll have a birthday party for Rosty on Friday night. So Rosty and my mom go shopping for party supplies and no birthday party would be complete without a birthday present!!

I wonder if he gets his smarts from me or his daddy??

Wild Turkey Farms blog

I have decided to start a farm blog. I'm sure I will still post farm related stories and pictures on here though. I just did not want our family blog to also be the farm blog. I know my kids are cute but our customers probably don't care about the cat Charlie built at Build-A-Bear.

We have a lot of people who receive our monthly newsletters and check us out on Facebook. The blog is just one more way to let our customers see the ins and outs of WTF (Wild Turkey Farms) and some of the day-to-day things that go on at our farm.

Hope everyone is enjoying this tropical weather. After a week of fighting frozen waterlines and frozen equipment we are really enjoying the heat wave. It seems as though the cold weather has done a number on all of the diesel engines around the farm and on all of our vehicle's batteries but at least it got rid of the mud for a while. Well just to look on the bright side, the days are getting longer & it will soon be time to start filling the greenhouse with vegetables for our garden so spring is just around the corner.

Join Us For "Fresh" The Movie at Catawba College Jan 28

The documentary FRESH, dubbed "a fresh look at food production," will be shown at the Center for the Environment facility on the Catawba College campus at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28. The screening, co-sponsored by the Center, Bread Riot and Wild Turkey Farms, offers a positive message about small farms and local food.
A panel discussion will follow with Dr. Chris Magryta of Salisbury Pediatrics, Maggie Blackwell of the Salisbury City Council and Bread Riot, Lee Menius of Wild Turkey Farms and Libby Post of Rowan/Salisbury Schools. Bread Riot will prepare a reception. FRESH is a grassroots effort to grow fresh food and ideas. Filmmaker Ana Sofia Joanes is releasing the movie to small groups to "mimic the food movement in that what's really growing is not different food but a new awareness. You cannot create a new vision or shift of consciousness from the top down," she says. "It must come from...the bottom up."

Great Food- Picked Up or Delivered

Just because the Salisbury Farmers Market is closed for the winter is no reason to do without great local food. We've teamed up with our good friend Chef Charles Semail of Chef Charles Catering in Charlotte to host a charcutterie class. The class will be held on Saturday January 30 beginning at 9am. You will get hands on experience in everything from cutting pork chops to making sausages and pates. The best part is that at the end of the day everyone takes home their share of the days work to enjoy. A family style gourmet lunch is included and you are sure to have great time developing your culinary skills.

Build-A-Cat

For Charlie's birthday he received a Build-A-Bear gift card. We finally had the opportunity for him to go to the store and make his bear (or in this case cat).

If you have never been to Build-A-Bear they have a wall of "animal shells" where you can select the animal you want to build. They range from bears, cats, & frogs to Alvin (from the Chipmunks) and Hello Kitty. They also range in cost from $10 to $25. We went down the wall three times before Charlie decided on a gray cat.

Next step is choosing a sound. This is optional but Charlie wanted a sound for his cat. As luck would have it they were out of "cat" sounds so he decided on "magic." Not sure what the sound is but he liked it!! The sounds range from $3 to $8.

Next step the machine that fills the cat with fluff. The next 2 pictures show Charlie in front of that machine (I'm sure it has a name but I don't know it). In the second picture Charlie is stepping on a black pedal which is the control for "filling" the cat with fluff. Also, notice there is a bucket of hearts beside Charlie. He selected a heart, gave it a kiss and made a wish.

After the cat was all stitched up the next step was to give her a bath. Basically, the yellow shower heads are blowing stray threads and fluff off of her.

And here is Charlie and his new buddy.....Cutie Pie.

They also have clothing & accessories that range from $5 and up. Why on earth did I not think of this concept??? We choose not to buy clothes and use some of the baby clothes we have at home. Cutie Pie has a cardboard box that the store gave us that she stays in during the day and she sleeps with Charlie at night. We took old baby blankets to make it soft and comfy for her & Charlie gave her a stuffed animal to keep her company while he is at preschool.

I post pictures of the boys and I post pictures of the farm but I don't always post pictures of our furry babies. We are still mourning the loss of Petey but I wanted to include pictures of the 2 furry babies who are making are days a little easier to deal with in Petey's absence.

For those of you who know Freckles (the Border Collie) she and Petey were only 5-months apart in age so they grew up together. She is adjusting well without him. She was very sad and did not eat for a couple of days but she is getting some her "spunk" back. She has even had to put Mel in her place a few times!!

Freckles loves to play with the tennis ball or a Frisbee. She got both for Christmas and Mel has tried to take them both away from her but Freckles let's her know who they belong to. I have seen Freckles playing with Mel (in a friendly way) though.

Freckles has been going to the farm a lot more lately. Lee has been working with Mel on commands so she can hopefully be a sheep dog. Freckles has that instinct and likes to be out with the cows but she doe not know any commands. Freckles was always my baby (a pet) and not a working dog but maybe in her old age she can work a little bit.

These pictures were taken when we took the boys to meet my parents. When they are going to stay & we aren't we meet my parents halfway. It's still a 4-hour drive round trip though.

Mel is laying in the floor between mine & Lee's seat. By the way, Mel is our Australian Shepherd puppy that we got at Thanksgiving. I don't think I ever posted her picture on here. The next 2 pictures are Freckles.
